New to The Church Studio Team: Entrepreneur Ronnie Carlson

Ronnie

My name is Ronald (Ronnie) Carlson and I’m the new operations team member at The Church Studio. I am so excited to meet everyone. Most recently I was the President and Owner of Jenks Beauty College from 2017-2022. When I  took over the college, there were less than 10 students. When I retired, there were over 130 students. Prior to that, I worked for 12 years at Oklahoma’s largest non-profit career college group in numerous aspects of administration, student life, and college culture.

Ronnie Carlson is happy to be at The Church Studio.

The Church Studio

The Church Studio

The historic church was turned into a recording studio and home office to Shelter Records in 1972. Under Leon Russell's leadership, the stone structure served as a creative workshop for songwriters, musicians, engineers, and singers to collaborate, learn, and inspire.

Quite a diverse profile Ronnie, it sounds like you have tons of experience such as I do, I’ve done so many different jobs in my life but always have wanted to be a sound engineer ever since I met Leon, he was so easy to talk to back then in ’72. I met he and JJ when he was bring JJ over to see Aaronson mansion after they started fixing it up for Leon and I was standing in one of the driveways in front of the gate because the only people there at the time were the workers and I was playing catch with a friend who lived across the street and down a couple of houses back then. So this truck pulls up and it’s so sunny out that we could not see inside so I just stood there playing when I was 14 and then he honks at me and my friend said they want you to move I think, so I stepped off the driveway and they pulled in and before they went in the gate they both stopped and got out to talk to us a minute and Leon gets out of the drivers side of his truck and introduces himself to me and I told him there was no need to because I already knew who he was. He said well I just bought this house so I’m going to be your neighbor and I could only say “I wish” lol and he and JJ kind of look at me questioningly and I said ” oh sorry, I am just visiting my friend who lives over there and now I’m going to see if his mom will rent me a room!” lol and they both got a kick and small snucker out of that so they sort of were just like regular guys or neighbors right then, not to me anything like rock and roll stars which they were both by then, Leon had played with so many people. I first used to idol Frank Zappa because of his intelligence and all and the great music he wrote but as I learned more about Leon, he quickly became my favorite of all rock and roll stars he had played with so many others and done so much compared to Zappa.
